Dr. J. Devin MacKenzie, Chief Technology Officer
Dr. MacKenzie joined Add-Vision in June 2005 and is responsible for research, development and external development projects at AVI. He is an internationally-recognized expert in the field of printed electronics and has served as IP contributor and technical consultant to a number of leading companies in the field, including Carbon Valley, Konarka, Kovio, and Cambridge Display Technology. He was a research associate and visiting scientist in Professor Sir Richard Friend's group at the University of Cambridge focused on organic transistors, photovoltaics, and P-OLEDs. At the University of Cambridge, he co-founded Plastic Logic, a leading company in printed polymer transistors. During his post doctoral tenure, Dr. MacKenzie researched polymeric and organic semiconductors, particularly solution-derived nanostructures, for use in solution-processible LEDs, photovoltaics, and photonics. He is an author of over 120 technical publications and patents in nanoscale devices, RFID, printed TFT’s, OLEDs, and photonics. Mr. MacKenzie earned his doctoral, masters and undergraduate degrees in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.


Janie Jo Breeden, Print Technician
Mrs. Breeden joined AVI in 2001 and brings nearly 15 years of printing experience in electronic and circuit components. She is instrumental to AVI’s effort to develop fully printed OLED displays. She offers specialty knowledge in all facets of printing, including ink blending and mixing, product and prototype development, and full-scale production. She offers experience in a wide variety of printing equipment, water- and solvent-based inks, and varying substrate materials, including cloth, paper, and plastic. Her leadership experience includes personnel management, production scheduling, and prototype development.
Dr. Jian Ping Chen, Sr. Research Scientist
Dr. Chen joined AVI in May of 2005 and is developing OLED-specific electrochemistries and ink formulations that maximize display operating performance, including brightness, lifetime and efficiency. Dr. Chen brings a successful 10-year track record as a leading scientist in organic and polymer synthesis, OLED emissive/transport materials, and fuel cell proton conductive membrane development. He has worked at such notable companies as PolyFuel (fuel cell development), Canon Development America (OLED development), and IBM Almaden Research Center (P-OLED development). Dr. Chen is an author of thirteen published papers in referenced journals and is a key inventor of eleven issued US patents in the field of OLEDs and fuel cell membranes. Dr. Chen holds a doctorate degree in Organic & Polymer Chemistry from Carleton University, Canada and B.S. in Chemistry from Zhejiang University, China.
Phil Hinkle, Print Technician
Mr. Hinkle joined AVI in 2005, and brings over 30 years of experience in printing. His experience is anticipated to contribute and advance the company’s IP in printed P-OLED displays. At AVI, Mr. Hinkle is actively involved in all phases of the printing process, including ink design & formulation, ink blending & mixing, developmental printing to large-scale production. Hinkle pioneered the printing process for Duracell's novel battery tester strip, which is found on nearly every Duracell battery package today. He holds a Masters of Divinity from the University of California, Berkeley.
Eric Jones, Research Scientist, MA
Mr. Jones joined AVI in January 2003, and has been leading the company’s development in flexible encapsulation technology for OLEDs. Prior to joining AVI, Mr. Jones gained direct OLED experience as a graduate student under Dr. Sue Carter at UCSC. His master's thesis focused on the electrical and optical properties of multilayered and blended PPV and PF-based polymer OLED devices. In addition, his research studies included extensive research in fundamental material characterization and electronic circuit design. Before UCSC, Mr. Jones earned his B.S. degree from the University of California, Berkeley and designed testing systems at the Center for Particle Astrophysics.
Dr. Joon Ho Shin, Research Scientist
Dr. Shin joined AVI as a Research Scientist in October 2007, and is actively spearheading the company's development of state-of-the-art, solution-processed R&D OLED devices, using novel device structures, proprietary ink formulations and advancements in processing. Prior to joining AVI, Dr. Shin was a Chemist Postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) focused on characterization of polymer electrolytes incorporating ionic liquids. Before LBNL, Dr. Shin was a Wenner-Gren Foundation postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Physics at Umea University in Sweden, and an Italian foreign ministry postdoctoral fellow at Italy's highly-esteemed ENEA. He is (co-)author of 36 published papers in peer-reviewed journals and 12 Korean and 2 U.S. patents. Dr. Shin holds a doctorate in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Gyeongsang National University in Korea. 

Dr. Yuko Nakazawa, Research Scientist
Dr. Nakazawa joined AVI as Research Scientist in April 2005, and has been actively involved in polymer OLED printing development, flexible barrier substrates, and novel P-OLED device structures. Prior to AVI, she conducted fabrication and characterization studies of OLED devices at SRI International. She has (co-)authored numerous publications in polymer OLED devices and organic photovoltaic cells. Ms. Nakazawa holds a doctorate in Physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz and graduated Summa Cum Laude with dual B.S. degrees in Physics and Mathematics from the State University of New York, Stony Brook and The Honors College at Stony Brook.

Dr. Yuka Yoshioka, Sr. Research Scientist
Dr. Yoshioka joined AVI as Sr. Research Scientist in July 2006 and brings over 5 years of experience in organic LED fabrication, printed electronics and characterization, as well as in-depth knowledge of polymer chemistry and deposition of novel materials. At AVI, she is responsible for accelerating the company’s evaluation of advanced LEP materials, print processes and related chemistries. Prior to joining AVI, Dr. Yoshioka served as a post-doctoral researcher with Prof. Ghassan Jabbour at the Flexible Display Center at Arizona State University. Dr. Yoshioka received her doctorate from the University of Arizona and a B.S. from The Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Vung Van Vo, Test Engineer
Mr. Van Vo joined AVI in October 2005, and is responsible for developing and managing the company’s automated testing systems for OLED device testing and characterization. Mr. Van Vo comes to AVI with almost 20 years of broad experience in test station design with such companies as PR&D, Osram Opto-Semiconductor, Hewlett Packard, and Edge Emitter Technologies. His capabilities include circuit design, software development, advanced design layout, and system integration. Mr. Van Vo earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri.

John Zhang, R&D & Facilities Engineer
Mr. John Zhang joined AVI in August 2007 and is a Material Science Engineer with a polymer electronics background. He offers nearly 20 years of experience in the areas of nonlinear optical polymer materials and optical waveguides. He joined AVI from the Applied Physics Laboratory of the University of Washington, and before that, Lumera Inc. and Cannon OLED, leaders in the their respective fields in specialty polymer materials for active components, such as electro-optic modulators used in the fiber-optic transmission, and OLED displays, respectively. Mr. Zhang holds a B.S. and M.S. in Polymer Science from the Chinese University of Science Technology in Hefei, PRC.  


Terri Rodgers, Buyer
Ms. Terri Rodgers joined AVI in August 2007 and brings extensive experience in procurement management, supplier negotiations, inventory control and logistics, product/process development, and competitive intelligence experience, most notably with the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) and Seagate Technology, a world-leader in disk drive design and manufacturing. She holds a number of key certifications in Financial Information Systems (FIS), Project Management and Six Sigma manufacturing. Ms. Rodgers is expected to make a significant contribution to AVI's procurement and asset management process to enable rapid scale up of AVI technology to the marketplace.

Robert Roeloffs, Business Development Manager
Mr. Roeloffs has served AVI for over three years and is focused on new business development, marketing and grant proposal writing to the NSF, DOE, DARPA and DOD, to name a few. Prior to AVI, Mr. Roeloffs was a Project/Test Engineer at Applied Materials' Pilot Line Facility where he designed, integrated and tested semiconductor cluster tools. Mr. Roeloffs earned his MBA in International Marketing from Thunderbird, the American Graduate School of International Management, and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo CA.

Dr. Sue Carter, Sr. Technical Consultant
Dr. Sue Carter is an active Professor in solid-state Physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) and has served as a Sr. Technical Consultant to AVI since July 2001. Dr. Carter created and charted Add-Vision’s early technology development plan and was able to demonstrate the feasibility of fully printed P-OLED structures on flexible substrates. Dr. Carter is valued for her specialized knowledge in the fields of experimental condensed matter physics, polymer physics, and electronic and optical properties of materials. At UCSC, Dr. Carter has strong collaborations with the industrial laboratories of IBM and AT&T, as well as CPIMA, the Material Research and Science Engineering Center and the National Renewable Energy Laboratories. Dr. Carter holds a doctorate degree from the University of Chicago.

Dr. Qibing Pei, Sr. Technical Consultant
Dr. Qibing Pei is a Professor of Material Science at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and serves as a Sr. Technical Consultant to AVI. Most notably, Dr. Pei was a successful Sr. Chemist at Dupont Display (formerly UNIAX Corporation) and a Sr. Research Engineer at SRI International. While at UNIAX Corp, Dr. Pei and Dr. Alan Heeger, the Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry (2000), are credited with inventing light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEC) that today form the basis of AVI’s display technology. Dr. Pei has also worked on a variety of electro-optic and electro-mechanical devices based on novel polymers he developed, including polymer LEDs, electroactive polymer artificial muscles, and biologically-inspired robots. Dr. Pei received his Ph.D. in Polymer Science from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing.
